MIA e.V.

MIA e. V. is a civil society organization dedicated to exposing and combating antigypsyism. As a national reporting and information center, our primary mission is to monitor antigypsyism across Germany. Since 2022, we have been documenting incidents, supporting those affected, and raising awareness among policymakers, public institutions, and society as a whole. Originally founded with funding from the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), MIA has received grants through the federal program “Demokratie leben!” by the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ) since 2025. Through a nationwide network, MIA fosters exchange among affected individuals, organizations, and expert institutions. Our work includes documenting incidents of antigypsyism, offering legal referrals and initial consultations to those affected, and engaging in awareness-raising, network-building, and empowerment initiatives. MIA operates through a federal office in Berlin and a growing network of regional reporting centres across Germany. Together, we work to create visibility, provide protection, and develop strategies to combat antigypsyism.

Our Vision

We are committed to a society in which antigypsyism has no place – a society where Sinti and Roma can live as equals, free from fear of discrimination or exclusion. Antigypsyist incidents are systematically recorded, taken seriously, and effectively addressed – by both civil society and state institutions.

Our vision is a society in which:
– Antigypsyism is not ignored but actively confronted—through consistent documentation, public awareness, and political change.
– Those affected are heard, supported, and empowered—through a reliable point of contact that provides guidance and assistance.
– State and civil society actors are informed and trained—so they can recognize and combat discrimination effectively.

Through our work, we lay the foundation for this future. We shed light on the scope and manifestations of antigypsyism.

Only together can we build a society where equal opportunity becomes reality—and where antigypsyism truly has no place.

Our Mission

Antigypsyism is historically rooted and deeply embedded in society. This specific form of racism is often overlooked or downplayed. Our mission is to make antigypsyism visible, empower those affected, and help build structures that actively counter it. MIA aims to bring visibility to the often-hidden reality of antigypsyist incidents and to gain a clearer understanding of their scope, forms, and the needs of those affected. Based on this, we work to develop targeted quality standards and awareness-raising training for civil society organizations and public institutions.

Our work focuses on four key areas:
Documentation and analysis:
We record and analyze incidents of antigypsyism—nationwide, systematically, and independently. We receive reports via phone, online, or in person. We document a range of incidents, including physical attacks, threats, property damage, graffiti, verbal abuse, hate speech, and propaganda materials such as leaflets, posters, or stickers.
Support and referral services:
We offer low-threshold initial and referral counseling for those affected, connecting them with appropriate legal, social, or psychosocial support services to ensure they receive the help they need.
Awareness and advocacy:
We raise awareness of antigypsyism through education, networking, and political advocacy. We expose discrimination and structural inequality, and our documentation helps inform strategies developed by public authorities, civil society, and policymakers to prevent and combat antigypsyism.
– Empowerment and training:
We promote empowerment and awareness through workshops, regional conferences, and training sessions—designed for affected individuals, professionals, and actors in the public sector.

Our mission is to build a strong, sustainable network against antigypsyism—for a just and discrimination-free society.

Structure

Originally launched as a project of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma (Zentralrat Deutscher Sinti und Roma), MIA has operated as an independent organization—the Reporting and Information Centre on Antigypsyism e.V.—since September 1, 2023.

The MIA federal office in Berlin coordinates nationwide activities (see Mission), leads the federal working group, and develops and ensures the implementation of quality standards across all areas of our work.

To date, six regional MIA reporting centres have been established in the federal states of Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Additional centers are planned in close cooperation with state governments.

Regional reporting centers—always anchored in the structures of community-based associations of Sinti and Roma —are essential for the long-term and sustainable fight against antigypsyism in Germany.

MIA is supported by an advisory board composed of experts from academia and civil society. This board provides technical and strategic guidance to the federal office.

Locations

In many parts of Germany, there is still a lack of local support structures for individuals affected by antigypsyist discrimination. To address this gap, MIA is steadily expanding a nationwide network of regional reporting centres.

The regional reporting centres aim to:
Improve accessibility by shortening access routes,
Strengthen regional networks, and
Provide tailored, local support for those affected.

In addition to the federal office in Berlin, six regional reporting centres are already operational. On their respective websites, you can find detailed information about the members of the federal working group and insights into their documentation and counseling activities.
